I want all of you to know how much I and our family have been blessed by your comments. We had a beautiful Memorial Visitation for Cat last Friday, and I can't express how much it meant to have so many come to honor her. Thanks to all for the food, the incredible flowers (I know Cat was seeing them from above, and wishing she had her camera!), and most of all, for the love you give. I will leave you with these words from a hand-written note that I found among Cat's things...they reflect her very essence. - Warren Ludwig

This post is from Cat's husband, Warren. It is with great sadness that I share this, but I know all of Cat's friends online would need to know.

After struggling for 15 years with extreme pain, and multiple chronic conditions, Cat could bear the burden no longer and took her own life Monday, April 19th.

We are all still reeling from the shock and loss. None of this seems real...she appeared to all of us to be doing better, little by little. But something in her fragile body was changed dramatically after her surgery in January. She was trying to be so strong for all the rest of our sakes, but only Cat knew how insurmountable it felt inside. But she is at peace now, and is with her Lord Jesus in her "Gardens of Heaven".

Please know how much Cat's online community meant to her. It gave her great joy to hear that you appreciated her beautiful photography. As her "real world" grew smaller with the pain, you all gave her sweet spirit freedom as she took images to share on her blog and Etsy store.

The photo above was taken at Easter, on one of her "good days" as we enjoyed some wonderful family time together. That is how we can remember her.

Evening walk

My slow evening walk was interrupted by these gorgeous flowers and the setting sun. I had to hurry home to grab my camera and hope I didn't miss the light. I opted to drive the few blocks back, just in case. I'm glad I did. Lighting can make or break a photo. It also helps to have a neighbor who has a stunning garden. I'm thankful she lives on a corner lot with an iron fence:)

I hadn't been to Kauffman Garden for a couple months. Here are a few shots that I captured. It has been an extremely long winter in Kansas City. So much snow and cold weather. I know spring is around the corner but it can't come soon enough for me.

The conservatory was filled with gorgeous flowers. It always helps to visit and breath in the beauty of nature.

I was happy that Crazy hadn't forgotten me. She came running when I called her name:)

I haven't written in a while because recovering from surgery has been more difficult than I imagined. I am still struggling, but hope the doctors can figure out how to help me. Keep me in your prayers.

Snow and more snow

A storm came through today and dropped 6 inches of gorgeous snow. The temperature was around 32 degrees so it wasn't hard to stay outside and take photos. I just had to dodge the huge snowflakes. This cardinal was patiently posing, knowing that I would bring out some birdseed for him and his mate. I just heard from the weather report that it is suppose to snow for 36 hours straight starting Sunday. I'm dreaming of spring:)

Metallic Blue is featured in the Photographers of Etsy blog. It is Mosaic Monday and "Into the blue..." was the title of the week. I am honored to have it included with such beautiful photos. Check out their site to see all 12 blue images.

I was taking photos of this iron gate when it went out of focus. I thought something was wrong with the camera, then I noticed that the wind had moved the gate open. I shifted my angle to get another shot, when a blue car come into view. I love surprises. I couldn't have planned for a better image.

Tomorrow will be 2 weeks since my surgery. I'm very slowly getting better. I have to remind myself that I had the tumor for over 10 years, so it will take time to recover. Pray for patience:) Here are the last of the Florida photos. It is cold and cloudy in Kansas and I have been having fun looking at the beach and surf.

Warren took this sunset photo the evening of my surgery. I wasn't feeling up to being a photographer but my eye wanted the shot. He is such a sweet husband and took lots of photos for me to choose from.

Honeymoon Island

Last week, we flew into Tampa, Florida two days before my surgery so we could be tourists. We stayed by the beach and had fun checking out the area. The colors were amazing. We have never seen water look so beautiful.

This was the view from my hospital bed at Tampa General Hospital. We arrived before sunrise and were so surprised to see the bay when we looked out the window. I was glad that Warren brought his sketchbook and paints. I convinced him to give this sketch to Dr. Norman as our way of saying thanks.

We will definitely be flying back someday with hopes of traveling down the coast. My wish list includes kayaking and parasailing! Here's to better days ahead.

Sand Key, Florida

I just got back to Kansas City a few hours ago. Before I crash, I wanted to tell you the great news. I did have a benign parathyroid tumor!! It was 10 to 12 years old. Surgery to remove it was a success. My life will be soooo much better in a few weeks. I can't wait! Thank you for all of your prayers and concern. I am so touched by reading your comments.

Many thanks go to Dr. James Norman, Dr. Douglas Politz, Dr. Arnold Goodman, and their staff for giving me my life back. Words cannot express my gratitude. Thank you , thank you , thank you!

Surgery

I will be having outpatient surgery on January 14th in Tampa, Florida. I have a 90-95% chance of having a rare benign parathyroid tumor. I have struggled with health issues for years and this might be the cause. I am hoping that this is the answer. If not, then we will keep searching. The surgery is a delicate one that few doctors know how to do. Thankfully, we found a specialist in Florida. It is snowing in Kansas City with up to 6 more inches predicted today. An arctic front comes in tonight with wind chills of -20 to -30 by Friday. I might not want to come back after the surgery! I won't have a computer handy, so I'll give you an update when I return.

We had a white Christmas this year. A winter storm rolled in yesterday and it snowed around 10 to 12 inches. After the presents were opened, I bundled up and took some photos of the birds in the backyard. This is one of my favorites. Hope you had a great day!

My favorite holiday movie is White Christmas, which I watch almost every year. It is on my to-do list. One of the songs that Rosemary Clooney sings is Count your Blessings. My wish for you is that you take time to count the blessings in your life. I realize that everyone struggles with something. So I know this will be more difficult for some than others. Gratitude can be a gift to yourself.

I tend to be a fair weather photographer and when it turns cold, I focus more on my jewelry. But Kauffman Memorial Garden was calling me and I had to go for a visit. I know it really isn't winter until the 21st, but with temperatures in the teens, it sure feels like it.

The conservatory is beautifully decorated for Christmas. A family with small children were there all dressed up ready for photos. They were posing in front of the snowman that is made out of dried hydrangea.

My husband decided to stay inside and sketch Crazy the cat while I wandered outside. She was a very good model. She only rolled over a few times.

The garden was very quiet that morning. The only sounds were the birds having their breakfast on a crabtree. They weren't happy with me disturbing their meal. They would fly away and then quickly return for more fruit.

As a child, I would play outside as long as there was daylight. Visiting the garden brought back memories of that simpler time. I can't wait for my next visit.

It was December 14th, 1979. I was a senior in nursing school and had to repay a debt to my friend by going on a blind date that I wasn't looking forward to. My date had moved to Kansas City a few months earlier because of a job offer from Hallmark. My friend, Margo, had been trying to set us up for a month and I kept saying no. As it turned out, that was the evening that I met my future husband. We liked each other right away. We had a short engagement and were married in June of the next year.

Creative Weekend

Last weekend my husband and I went to a few garden centers so I could try out my macro lens. Whenever we go out, he brings his sketch book and a small set of paints. Here are a few sketches that he did while I was shooting.

I had also asked him if he wanted to go with me to Lawrence, Kansas to check out an Art Fair. He isn't fond of crowds, but said yes anyway. I am totally aware of the gem I have in my spouse! While I was shopping, he stood back and did a few quick sketches of vendors. I love the Santa look-alike.

I had a wonderful time with my husband shopping, shooting, and wandering the streets of Lawrence.

Thanksgiving is tomorrow and I have a few quiet moments to actually think about the holiday. Usually when someone asks me what I am thankful for, I start out with "family and friends" and go from there. But this year, it's all about those relationships. December will be here before we know it. So, I've been working on Christmas cards, both for selling and sending. I love turning on holiday music when I make my list. While I fill out each card, I lift up a prayer of thanksgiving for that person or family, and ask for blessings to follow them throughout the next year. I cherish this tradition. My goal this last weekend was to capture the autumn leaves before they fall. It always happens so quickly. The first two photos are from Shawnee Mission Park and we just had our first freeze. The grass was frozen and so was I! The last photo is from Atchison, Kansas, the birthplace of Amelia Earhart. As it so happens, the movie Amelia, starring Hillary Swank and Richard Gere, opened this week. I can't wait to see it.

Annapolis Day 2

Our 2nd day in Annapolis was sunny and warmer, so we did lots of walking. We worked off all the crab cakes that we ate! I love wandering the side streets looking at the houses and local architecture. We checked out many of the shops in the historic area. My favorites were the jewelry stores and art galleries...not surprising. McBride Gallery is one of the best my husband and I have ever seen. I'm partial to pastels and photography, while my husband is drawn to oil paintings and sculpture.

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Maryland after attending my nephew's wedding. Congrats to Chris and Angela! We wish you many years of joy and happiness. We had a wonderful time with family and friends. It was a gorgeous celebration.

My husband, Warren, and I are in an Art Show together. "Common Ground" is the first ever exhibit showcasing visual art education at Lawrence Arts Center. The nearly 400 entries range from student to professional level. Warren and I have each enjoyed taking classes there and were asked to participate in the show. Back in 2005, I asked Warren to enter another exhibit together, but he declined. I am so happy that he finally agreed. I hope there are more to come.

I crave the sea, but since I am land-locked in Kansas, I seek out area lakes. Yesterday, I grabbed my camera, a lawn chair, and Nicholas Sparks' book, Message in a Bottle, and headed to Shawnee Mission Park. I needed some alone time and found the perfect spot. There was no wind and the water was like glass. I so enjoyed my afternoon in the sun.

My favorite season is almost here. I love the sights and smells of that time of year. The sun is still warming the days but it's sweater weather at night. When the kids were little we always went to the apple orchard to pick bags and bags of apples. Time stood still when we were in the fields. Such sweet memories! I missed my Gallery Show

Last Friday, I had to go to the ER instead of my show. I was having severe stomach pain and I just came home last evening. Good news is that I should be totally healed in 6 weeks with medication:) I'm lucky that this is the first time I've had to stay more than a few hours in the hospital with an illness.

Here are some of my thoughts while sitting in my hospital bed:
• I have the most amazing husband, 2 daughters, family and friends.
• Nurses and aides rule!
• Be grateful for the small things.
• Kindness goes a long way.
• Independence is good up to a point. Learn how to receive from others.

I am so thankful to be home and sleep in my own bed. Can't wait to see what life has to offer!

My husband and I set out to go to the River Market so I could take some architectural shots. Once I saw the sun shining on the railroad tracks, I decided that the Union Station would be a great place to stop first. We had so much fun wandering around the area that we never made it to the market. We will just have to make another trip downtown!

My husband and I decided to spend our Saturday exploring Lake Perry near Lawrence, Kansas. We had been there once before but only saw a fraction of it. I brought my camera and a book. He brought 3 apples, some carving tools, and a sketch book. Yes, we are an usual pair. We enjoy our time together but are independent enough to stay busy with our interests. The only thing we forgot was the sunscreen!

We did find a wonderful cove to spend a few hours creating, reading, and eating. There happened to be a group that brought their catamaran sailboats. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them get ready for a day of sailing. The sights and sounds were so relaxing. I can't wait to go back.

The Plaza

I am part of a team on Etsy called Photographers of Etsy, or POE for short. I was checking out their New Works feature and as I scrolled down the page, I saw my photo. What a fun surprise! Here is their link.

I took this photo from the top of the Hall's building on the Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri. I just finished shooting at a local garden and while I was driving home, the sunset turned out to be gorgeous. Many of my favorite images are not the ones I originally go out to shoot. That is the part of photography that feels like a treasure hunt. I never know what is waiting for me around the corner!

I became aware of Laura Slocum and her story from another seller on Etsy. Laura was diagnosed with stage 3 Ovarian Cancer in June. She is currently undergoing chemotherapy.

Etsy Project Embrace was created by her friends to support Laura, increase awareness, and raise funding for cancer research. I believe that you must play the hand you’re dealt. Six weeks ago, I was diagnosed with stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. My mom died from the same. I am a huge believer in eating right, exercising, and getting regular checkups. I’ve done all those things, yet, I have cancer. WOW. That’s a life-changing situation, for sure. I just turned 46 …. (a very very young 46!) Strangely, I feel blessed. Most everyday of these 6 weeks, I’ve had a smile on my face. I’m going to play the hand I’ve been dealt in the best and most positive way I know how. I’m so fortunate my boys are older, they drive, they can do laundry and help around the house. There will always be some people in this world who have it better and some who have it worse. That’s just life.

There are 4 things I know for sure:
1. I am a Christian and I believe God has a plan for me.
2. I believe in myself to do the very best I can do and try to help others in the process by getting my story out there.
3. I have the most wonderful and supportive husband, family and friends.
4. Logging onto Etsy everyday and hearing from my friends will keep this smile on my face, not matter what I am going through.

This summer I become special friends with a weathered cardinal. He has me trained to feed him and his mate whenever I'm on the screened-in porch for meals. He chirps and circles the porch till I give in and throw out some seed. I feel a little like Snow White with all of the wildlife that comes to dine with me:) I've named him "Red" for obvious reasons and after my grandpa's nickname. Since I am the 17th of 21 grandchildren, I was too young to see his red hair. I had to take everyone's word for it.

The other day I was working on a photography class assignment when Red landed a little over a foot away from me. I couldn't believe that he was so close. Then a rabbit hopped by and stopped about 5 feet away. He sat for over a minute while I finished my assignment. I needed one image that was taken on 7 different settings for our study on white balance. He was a great subject. Only his nose and whiskers moved!

Saturday morning my husband and I were making our to-do list for the day. It was gorgeous weather and I didn't want to do work. I wanted to play. Life is too short. So we decided to sketch and shoot photos.

I needed to take an action shot for my photography class, so we went to The Legends in Kansas City, Kansas. It is an outdoor shopping mall and has a beautiful fountain that I could shoot. My husband was going to sketch while I was busy with my assignment.

When we got there, it was crazy busy with a sidewalk sale. I wasn't sure I would be able to get any shots because of all the people. I almost turned around because my husband isn't fond of crowds, but then I heard live music and knew he would like listening to them. I decided to see if I could get some photos of the band and use them for my assignment. The band, "90 Minutes", is awesome. Very tight music. All the musicians are great. I didn't want to leave. I kept taking photos of the bass player, Tyson, and was hoping to capture a good shot. Warren decided to do a sketch of him as well. Warren showed him the sketch during a break and Tyson wanted a copy. After we got home, Warren decided to use my photos to make a mixed-media collage/digital painting. That is the first image in this posting. I love it! He did an amazing job. Hope Tyson likes it as well. Here is a link to Warren's blog.

Here is my action shot photo for class. I was told to be creative with a stop motion photo. This is so much better than a fountain shot!

On the way home we saw 4 hot air balloons and decided to follow them. Here is my favorite one, a few minutes before it landed. What a great day it turned out to be.

My husband and I had a quick 2 day vacation in Omaha, Nebraska last week. Here are a few photos from our trip. We had a great time at the old market, zoo, and botanical garden. My favorite was the garden. It was an overcast day, so I didn't get too many workable photos. His favorite was the zoo. Two silverback gorillas had a knock-down-drag-out fight in front of us. .....I'm addicted to reading! I was a self proclaimed non-reader. Once I graduated from Nursing School, I promised myself that I wouldn't read a book for a year. It was over five years before I finally picked up a book. Since May, I have read 6 books! It is crazy. I'll finish my 7th book tonight. Here is what I am currently reading.

This is my second Nicholas Sparks book. I've already bought another one. I love his writing style and stories. I am able to vacation in North Carolina without leaving my home state of Kansas!

I would love to hear what others are reading. Do you have a list of suggestions? Can't wait to start another adventure!

I am having fun getting use to the macro lens that I just purchased. I have never used one before and I will need to read up on it. I'm still so spoiled with the point and shoot cameras that I need to educate myself on the dslr's. I did sign up for my first photography class for July. It is for 4 weeks and it will go over the basics. Let you know how is goes.

Art in the Garden was so much fun. Because of the threat of rain, we were moved to a covered building and within a few hours the sun appeared. The weather turned out to be gorgeous! The jazz band was amazing and champagne was flowing. I loved meeting new people and talking with customers of mine throughout these last three years. Both my photography and jewelry sold well. One of my pearl bracelets will be given to a bride to wear with her Sari wedding dress. I was so touched. It truly was a wonderful day.

Garden Magic

My mom and sister were visiting this week from out of town. We had a great time catching up. They left at 4:30 this morning. I wasn't able to go back to sleep, so I decided to get ready to go to the Plaza and take some photos. I love the early morning light. My husband came along with me and took his sketchbook. Check out his blog to see what sketch he ended up with. I'm too tired to edit and crop the photos I took today. So I've decided to show you two images that I have taken on the Plaza on an earlier visit. They are from the same fountain. The first photo is of the upper level. The 2nd photo is the lower basin that is lined with mosaic tile. It is one of my favorite fountains there. If you are ever in Kansas City and are on the Country Club Plaza, it is located right in front of Starbuck's. Children especially like it too. You'll understand why once you see it!

I was checking out Karon's Wild Women Jewelry blog when I saw that she was awarded the Kreativ Blogger award. Yay Karon! I was getting ready to comment on her post when I saw that she nominated me! Thanks so much Karon. I'm pretty new to blogging, so I hope I get this right. I am suppose to list 7 things I love and then name 7 people I think deserve this award.

7 things I love:

1. The love of my life, my husband, Warren. Being a mom of 2 daughters. Loving my parents, sisters, in-laws, etc....

2. Going to bead shows. Never knew they even existed before 2005, when I started making jewelry.

3. Being outside. I need the open air to live.

4. Rediscovering photography.

5. I haven't worked as a nurse in many many years, but I loved it. I worked in the Fullterm Nursery at Kansas University Medical Center. Newborns are so sweet.

6. This new adventure of creating art. It is so much fun.

7. The older I get, I love challenging the rules.

I have to give the credit to my husband for this photo. One Saturday morning, on the Plaza in Kansas City, I was taking photos and he was painting. We decided to have lunch and while waiting for our food, he saw the reflection in the spoon. When I was loading this photo on Etsy last night, he smiled and said, "Didn't I tell you to take that photo?" Yes, honey, you did :)

Magnum Opus

Jill Jenkins owns a boutique in Bonner Springs, Kansas, called "Magnum Opus". I sell both my photography and jewelry there with other local artists. Jill is also a jewelry designer. That is how I met her back in 2005. She was gracious enough to help a beginner learn how to wire wrap.

This antique cash register is one that her grandfather used in his business . I know it has heard some great stories.

This is Foxy Marie. She adopted Jill and her shop a few years back. It is sweet to watch the children bring her treats. I love the small town feel of this shop. I am very lucky to be a part of it. Thanks, Jill!

I have fond memories of lilacs as a child. We had a few of them in our yard. It was always a sign that warm weather was around the corner. I went searching for them on Monday and found two small bushes next to the parking lot of a local garden. When most people would be inside the formal garden taking photos, I was enjoying the flowers outside. That's typical for me. I like the unusual. It is the unplanned shot that turns out to be my favorite.
